Prosthodontist

A Prosthodontist is a dental specialist who has successfully completed an advanced education program in Prosthodontics. Prosthodontics is the field pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation, and maintenance of oral function, comfort, appearance, and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth and/or maxillofacial tissues using biocompatible substitutes. There are only two specialty offices in Prosthodontics outside the Faculty of Dentistry in Manitoba. They are the Winnipeg Dental Implant Centre and Better Teeth Better Life.

Most general dentists and denturists in Manitoba will practice some aspect of Prosthodontics. Some general dentists and denturists in Manitoba will unintentionally mislead patients about having dental specialist qualifications by announcing their practice is limited to Prosthodontics or by advertising trademarked products like Geneva 2000 Prosthodontics.

Many factors need to be considered when selecting a care provider. Research has reported greater patient satisfaction with lower dentures made by dentists when compared to denturists(4). Professional licensure requires higher clinical standards for dental specialists compared to dentists.
